This is best explained with fanless computers for the military. Being networked and performing fast tasks with a lot of computing power is what is needed everywhere these days. Computers must therefore also perform their reliable service, for example, in the field for anti-aircraft defence, on the harvester at the farmer’s and on the piste bully in the snow.
Conventional computers cannot withstand temperatures, shocks or vibrations. They are also not resistant to heat or cold, to water and chemicals. Normal PCs or monitors are only available for a short time, they lose value quickly, have a very limited operating and service life. They are fragile in operation as well as maintenance-intensive (virus, updates, cleaning, replacement of memory, etc.).
The industrial computer, however, has the properties to withstand heat and cold, water and chemicals, if machines or other applications have to be operated safely and reliably over several decades in order to provide a long service life. This can be a passenger or goods lift, or a locomotive, which must be available to the SBB for at least 25 years in the first of 2 operating halves and after a fundamental revision for another 25 years.
