Without thorns, no roses

Every spring, as Easter approaches, the city of Zurich transforms in subtle but deeply meaningful ways. One of the most touching traditions takes place quietly but powerfully across the city’s public squares and corners: the fountains are filled with roses. This beautiful gesture is part of a campaign by the Reformierte Kirche and is known for its symbolic motto: “Ohne Dornen keine Rosen” – “Without thorns, no roses.”

From Saturday, 12 April to Monday, 21 April 2025, locals and visitors alike will be able to witness this stunning display. Fountains usually known for their clear, bubbling water will be overflowing with vibrant roses in red, pink, white and yellow hues. These flowers are more than just a visual delight; they represent a message of hope, endurance, and beauty amidst hardship.

The Message Behind the Roses

The phrase “Ohne Dornen keine Rosen” captures a universal truth: that beauty and joy often emerge through pain and struggle. In the context of Easter—a time of reflection, sacrifice, and ultimately, renewal and rebirth—this message takes on profound meaning. The thorns symbolise life’s inevitable challenges, while the roses represent the grace and light that can grow from them.

This initiative isn’t just about religious symbolism; it’s an invitation to all people, regardless of belief, to pause and reflect. In our fast-paced, often difficult world, it offers a quiet moment of contemplation and encouragement.

A City-Wide Art of Contemplation

Zurich is a city known for its efficiency and elegance, but during this time, its spiritual side shines. The placement of roses in fountains turns these everyday urban fixtures into spaces for meditation and beauty. Passersby stop to take photos, families linger with children, and some may even leave a personal note or flower of their own.

This year, over a dozen fountains across the city will be adorned. Locations include well-known spots such as the Münsterhof, Helvetiaplatz, and small neighborhood squares in districts like Wiedikon and Oerlikon. Each fountain tells its own story, transformed from a utilitarian structure into a vessel of meaning.

Community, Connection, and Care

The Reformierte Kirche in Zurich has been organizing this event for several years, and each time it draws more attention and appreciation. Volunteers and church members work tirelessly to gather and arrange thousands of roses. Florists and local growers often contribute, seeing it as their own act of community support.

What makes this tradition particularly touching is how it connects people. It’s common to see strangers talking to each other by the fountains, sharing their interpretations of the message or simply expressing awe. Especially in times of social division or global unrest, small moments of unity like this have a powerful impact.

More Than a Tradition

In many ways, this rose-filled gesture stands as a metaphor for what we all go through. Switzerland, like the rest of the world, has faced its share of difficulties—from the pandemic to economic uncertainty and environmental concerns. Yet in the midst of these “thorns,” communities have found ways to support one another and to create moments of shared beauty and hope.

For those living in Zurich or just visiting during Easter, this tradition offers a chance to see the city in a new light. It’s a reminder that while we cannot avoid hardship, we can still cultivate compassion, joy, and resilience.

Practical Information

The roses will be on display from 12 to 21 April 2025. Visitors can explore the various decorated fountains on foot or by bike. It’s a great way to discover different neighbourhoods of Zurich while also engaging in a meaningful seasonal ritual.

Many churches will also be open during this time for quiet reflection, services, or simply to learn more about the tradition. Some may offer special events or guided walks focused on the meaning of Easter and the symbolism of the roses.
