
Modular smart metering systems for efficient energy management at Juconn

Digital energy efficiency and a networked measurement infrastructure are made possible by the optimised interaction between SensorMate controllers, routers and connectivity, providing Juconn with a flexible communication solution.
Juconn GmbH is a German company specialising in digital energy and building technology. Juconn develops smart systems for collecting, processing and transmitting energy and consumption data in residential and commercial properties. Its platform connects meters, sensors and gateways to form a comprehensive smart system that increases transparency and makes energy efficiency measurable.
Particular emphasis is placed on existing properties, where modern smart metering solutions often need to be integrated into the existing technical infrastructure without the need for major structural alterations. In this context, there is a demand for flexible, compact, cost-effective systems that can be installed and operated quickly and easily, and scaled up or down as required.

Another key component is parallel metering. Currently, around 80% of meters for utilities such as heating, cooling, electricity and water can be read and transmitted digitally using a specially developed optical read head. INOVIS can implement a suitable solution for digital parallel metering for a further 15% or so of existing meters within 2 to 4 weeks, integrating it into the existing ecosystem. In only around 3 to 5% of cases does the old analogue meter need to be replaced with a modern smart meter. This enables optimal total cost of ownership to be achieved, particularly in existing properties. This is a decisive advantage, given that existing buildings account for the vast majority of the property stock in our region.
The aim is to visualise energy flows, optimise processes, and ensure that buildings are fit for the digital future: sustainable, connected and efficient.
The challenge
In order to cope with the growing number of smart metering projects and connected buildings, Juconn required a solution that combined reliability, scalability, and flexible integration.
The communication architecture had to be able to collect data from a wide variety of measurement points via Modbus, M-Bus or analogue signals, and transmit this data securely to the cloud with minimal installation effort and maximum operational reliability.
In projects involving existing properties in particular, it was crucial to make the best possible use of existing structures, keep installation complexity to a minimum, and create a cost-effective, roll-out solution for multiple sites.
The solution
In collaboration with INOVIS Live Automation AG, a modular, future-proof smart metering solution has been developed that combines local intelligence, secure communication, and comprehensive connectivity.
At the heart of the system are the Smartronic SensorMate controllers, which were co-developed by INOVIS and consist of SM modules and base boards. These compact control units form the system’s local intelligence. They collect meter data, process it on-site, and transmit it reliably to the cloud.
Smartronic SensorMate control systems play a key role in the success of these projects: they enable the structured collection of a wide variety of measurement data, lay the foundations for a flexible system architecture and facilitate a compact, practical implementation, particularly in existing properties. Thanks to their modular design, they can be tailored to specific project requirements, interfaces can be integrated efficiently and the system can be prepared for future expansions.

The assembled printed circuit boards are fitted onto a test adapter and checked using the Smart Tester. This ensures that each board is tested for functionality before it is used.

An automatic placement machine precisely positions electronic components on printed circuit boards. This step ensures a consistently high level of quality in mass production.

Production and Quality Control
Several SensorMate controllers have been prepared and tested in preparation for the next steps. This testing process ensures that only fault-free assemblies are used.

The Milesight UR32-L04EU-W-485 router is used for communication and has been specially adapted by INOVIS to meet Juconn’s requirements. This robust 4G LTE router establishes a stable connection between Smartronic SensorMate controllers and the back-end platform and supports Modbus communication via RS485.
A key benefit of this architecture is that the application software developed by Juconn can be run directly on the router. Whereas it was often necessary in the past to use a traditional BoxPC or EdgePC alongside a separate router or gateway, today the entire solution runs on a single device in a highly integrated manner. This reduces hardware costs, simplifies installation and increases flexibility, while also improving the security of the overall architecture. This approach also offers clear Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) advantages, as it involves fewer components, interfaces and maintenance requirements. At the same time, this integration creates a technologically advanced foundation that can be utilised efficiently and economically for many other applications.
INOVIS provides national roaming SIM cards to ensure comprehensive network coverage throughout Germany, including in basements and remote technical centres.
In addition, failover SIM solutions are used to further enhance reliability. If a mobile network is temporarily unavailable or experiencing quality issues at a site, communication can be maintained via an alternative network. This is a key advantage for maintaining stable operations, particularly in technically challenging environments such as basements, sub-distribution rooms, and decentralised technical centres.

In this context, national roaming means that a SIM card can connect to different mobile networks, depending on availability, in order to use the best possible connection. In Germany, this applies to Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, Telefónica O2 and 1&1 networks. In Switzerland, the networks are Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt. For example, if the Vodafone signal is weak in a basement in Germany, a suitably configured solution could use a network with stronger coverage, such as Deutsche Telekom or O2 Telefónica, instead. Similarly, if reception is poor in a plant room in Switzerland, Swisscom or Salt could be used instead of Sunrise.
Furthermore, INOVIS acts as a logistics and integration partner, pre-configuring, testing and delivering devices on a project-by-project basis. The range is completed by accessories such as current clamps, sensors and antennas, enabling us to supply complete smart metering kits from a single source.
The result
This joint solution enables the rapid, scalable and secure implementation of smart metering projects.
Thanks to the intelligent combination of Smartronic SensorMate controllers, a customised Milesight router and comprehensive mobile network connectivity, Juconn can now efficiently install, maintain and expand complete energy metering systems remotely.
This solution is particularly beneficial for existing properties, as it allows for the efficient integration of existing building structures without the need for costly additional infrastructure. This speeds up roll-outs, reduces project costs, and improves cost-effectiveness throughout the entire life cycle.
The result is a solution that visualises energy flows in real time, shortens installation times and significantly reduces maintenance requirements – a crucial step towards the digitalisation of the energy sector.
