Monitoring solution for Amberg Technologies

Add-on camera solution for manual live monitoring of the impact hammer in tunnelling

The Amberg tunnel surveying solution from Amberg Technologies supports tunnelling in all construction phases. The system solutions summarised under the name Amberg Tunnel combine precise measuring instruments with task-specific software. Significant increases in efficiency are achieved, particularly in the areas of tunnel navigation, tunnel profile measurement, tunnel scanning, geotechnical analyses and tunnel surveys.

An important part of Amberg Technologies’ offering is the Tunnel Seismic Prediction while Excavating (TSPwE) system. This advanced technology helps predict rock conditions during tunnel construction, ensuring safety and optimising efficiency. To support the TSPwE system, Amberg Technologies collaborated with INOVIS Live Automation AG to provide an add-on for live monitoring of the percussive hammer to observe the proper functioning of the hammer as it strikes the rock. This add-on extends the service life of the percussion hammer by ensuring via live stream that the hammer is not damaged by lack of resistance or contact with the wall.

TSPwE: Predicting rock conditions in real time

The TSPwE system is based on an impact hammer that is preloaded against the rock mass to generate seismic waves. A trigger unit connected to the hammer sends the exact time of each blow to the operator’s tablet. Seismic receivers placed in the tunnel record the waves emitted by each hammer blow, with each receiver coupled to a transceiver. All devices (trigger unit, tablet and transceiver) are part of an autonomous WLAN network that is managed by a central router.

INOVIS Live Automation AG’s contribution: Advanced monitoring and connectivity solutions

While Amberg Technologies sets up the core network, INOVIS plays an essential role by providing specialised hardware that improves the efficiency and reliability of the system. A central component of INOVIS is the provision of cameras that allow operators to receive a live video feed of the impact hammer during operation. This monitoring ensures that the hammer is always positioned correctly, minimising interruptions and allowing for quick adjustments.

The distribution box offers innovative flexibility for the user, as it provides inputs and outputs for up to two cameras. This allows the user to decide whether they need one or two cameras for their application – depending on the requirements on site. INOVIS Live Automation AG goes one step further and allows users to customise their installation precisely: Whether it’s simple monitoring with one camera or more comprehensive coverage with two cameras, the solution adapts seamlessly to individual needs and ensures maximum efficiency.

Both the junction boxes and all cable feed-throughs made by INOVIS have been sealed with protection class IP67. This ensures that cameras and other sensitive devices are reliably protected from extreme tunnel conditions such as dust, moisture and dirt, so that the technology functions smoothly even in demanding environments.

The connectivity solution: Box Distributor and Box WiFi Bridge

To ensure seamless data transfer throughout the TSPwE system, INOVIS supplied a two-part connectivity solution consisting of a distribution box and WiFi bridge box.

  • WiFi Bridge Box: This box contains MikroTik’s SXTsq Lite2 access point, which provides robust and reliable WiFi connectivity. It ensures uninterrupted communication between the various components of the TSPwE system and thus ensures smooth operation even under difficult conditions.
  • Distribution box: This box contains the TSW100 switch from TELTONIKA, a power supply unit and the RBGPOE-CON-HP PoE converter from MikroTik. Together, these components supply power and manage the data flow between the devices. With the included accessories, this box becomes a complete, integrated solution that ensures smooth operation of the system.

Unrivalled performance in tunnelling

The combination of distributor box and WiFi bridge box forms a powerful connectivity solution that is specifically tailored to the needs of the TSPwE system. INOVIS ensures that data is transmitted seamlessly and the equipment is monitored in real time, allowing operators to carry out work with confidence as it progresses.

Through its network solutions, INOVIS enables Amberg Technologies to optimise its tunnel systems, ensuring safety, reliability and performance even under the most challenging conditions. This partnership plays a crucial role in advancing the precision and efficiency of modern tunnelling.
